Large Pair Of J M Blashfield Terracotta Garden Urns ( sold )

A fine and rare, very large pair of 19th century terracotta garden urns by John Marriott Blashfield. Model no 186, titled 'Vase' in their 1857 catalogue 'A selection of vases, statues, busts, &c., from terra-cottas'. Decorated with large rams heads, with deep scrolled horns and large swags of foliage with ribbon decoration, both in very good condition and fully stamped 'Blashfield's Patent Pottery'.

John Marriott Blashfield started producing terracotta architectural and garden statuary items in the 1840's in Millwall, London, moving to Stamford in Lincolnshire in 1858 to be nearer his source of clay and finally closing down due to bankruptcy in 1875.
Noted for his fine, crisp modelling, pale buff terracotta products, he had many notable commissions including four colossal statues for Crystal Palace ( now lost ) modelled by John Bell and architectural elements for the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
Publishing several catalogues, containing a wide range of garden ornaments and architectural products, you can find examples of his work at Burghley House, the wonderful Triton fountain at the Radcliffe Infirmary Oxford, Dulwich College and Garthmyl Hall.

English circa 1850

Provenance: By repute from Sion House, Designed by John Nash, Tenby, South Wales.
