Pair Of Medieval Carved Stone Fragments
A wonderfully decorative pair of 16th century ? carved stone fragments of a knight, possibly St George and a Maiden. Boldly carved, with draped fabrics, ecclesiastical masonry, the whole with traces of later polychrome and gilt decoration, with obvious losses.
I've had these for a while now trying to decide their age, are they 19th century or much earlier, very difficult to tell without their top half. The slightly elongated leg of St George is typical of early depictions of knights, the moulding that is behind the maiden, very reminiscent of early church work, the fabric is not overly romanticised, all these things have brought me to the decision that they are medieval, but happy to be proved wrong and are priced accordingly.
