George III Marquetry Picture By J H Grigg

A fascinating and very rare, George III period, marquetry picture in the Cottage Orne` or Swiss style, popular in the early 19th century. Made by J H Grigg, comprising of three hundred pieces of wood, depicting a house in the Highlands, where George III entertained the Scottish clans with games. On the reverse you can find two original labels, one explaining the picture and its construction and the other J H Griggs patronage by the Duke of Wellington.

English circa 1820

Labels read:

A residence in the highlands where his Majesty entertained the different clans who went through their games
A mechanical* picture containing 300 pieces of wood.
Made by J H Grigg

Patronised by His Grace the Duke of Wellington ( some undeciphered text )

* mechanical in the 18th century meaning to be constructed and made by hand.
