19th Century Masonic Memento Mori Small Coffin ( sold )
A rare, original painted, Masonic small coffin, used inside the Chamber of Reflection, a quiet room where candidates contemplate their life and character before initiation for a Master Mason third degree. All over scumble decorated, with trompe l'oeil brass head nails, hour glass, representing the unstoppable passage of human life, skull and crossbones, an emblem of mortality and the initials M. B. meaning Mac-Benac (or Mahabone), which is the foundational esoteric substitute word revealed to a Mason upon reaching the 3rd degree. In very good condition, some loss to the banding around the top edge.
