Early 19th Century Carved Stone Urn Or Fountain Bowl In The Manner Of Archibald Knox

The most wonderful and rare, early 20th century, carved sandstone, fountain bowl or centrepiece garden urn, very much in the manner of Archibald Knox. The large bowl, with bold Celtic inspired carved decoration with knotted detail, sits on a trio column, with Celtic decoration to the lower half, the whole standing on a bold square base, in very good condition and beautifully weathered. This is very similar in design to the Compton garden urns that were designed by him and made by Compton Potteries for Liberty's of London, in the first quarter of the 20th century, i've never come across anything in carved stone before,

English circa 1910

Archibald Knox (1864 – 1933) was one of the main people behind the Celtic Revival style at the beginning of the 20th century. His bold designs were marketed by Liberty & Co and garden items produced by Compton Pottery.
Knox played a pivotal role in the Arts and Crafts and Celtic Revival movements in Britain at the turn of the 20th century. Born on the Isle of Man in 1864 he was greatly influenced by his headmaster at Douglas Grammar School, the Reverend John Quine, who introduced him to Celtic lore and design, an interest which later inspired his artistic career.
