19th Century Grand Tour Carved Marble Figure Of Dionysus
A rare, late 19th century, Grand Tour carved marble figure of Dionysus, sometimes known as Narcissus, very well executed, with obvious losses and beautifully weathered. I've seen this model cast in bronze many times, but never come across a carved marble version.
Unearthed in Pompeii in 1862 the original 1st-century BC to 1st-century AD statuette depicts a slender, youthful figure in a relaxed contrapposto stance with a downward gaze, a Roman version of a Greek original, initially named Narcissus due to his gazing posture, scholars later reidentified the figure as Dionysus.
Italy circa 1880
