Very Large Early 19th Century Italian bronze door Knocker ( sold )
An Italian, very large scale, early 19th century bronze door knocker, depicting Neptune and seahorses, after Alessandro Vittoria, Italian, 1525-1608. The Nemean lion mask surmount above a figure of Neptune within a pierced cartouche of opposed sea horses on a shell, the circular striking plate cast in the form of a patera.

This door knocker is noted in the inventories in the collection of Jeffrey Whitehead. Although, little is known of him, he appears to have been a stockbroker and a passionate collector of works of art and embroidery.
