Large 18th Century Oil On Canvas Hatchment ( sold )
A wonderfully decorative, 18th century, oil on canvas funerary hatchment. In totally untouched condition, original black and gilt frame, weathered and worn paint with a couple of punctures to the canvas.
A large lozenge shaped Heraldic Painting, usually painted on canvas within a wooden frame. A hatchment would have originally hung or been displayed over the front door of the house of a dead person, whose arms it portrayed, it would stay there until that person was buried in the local church. It would at that point be hung on the wall of the nave aisle, until a tomb or monument was erected. You can find these in local parish churches throughout the UK
