victorian cucumber straightener

Victorian Glass Cucumber Straightener

A  rare 19th century, victorian hand blown glass cucumber straightener. In very good condition.

Designed by George Stephenson who also built the first public railway line in the world and of course ' Stephenson's Rocket ' . Stephenson who had a problem with crooked cucumbers growing in his glasshouses at Tapton House, had several made at his Newcastle steam engine factory. The young fruit is fed through through the small aperture at the top, which is then hung and tied by string from it's knop to the framework in the greenhouse, a wonderful piece of 19th century ingenuity.

English circa 1860

H 19" x W 3" x D 3"
