john mathews royal pottery terracotta herb pot

John Mathews, Royal Pottery, Weston Super Mare, Terracotta Herb Pot

A rare and truly wonderful, large, late 19th century, terracotta, kitchen herb pot ( identified by the drainage holes around the base ). Produced by John Mathews, Royal pottery, Weston Super Mare. Fully stamped with the makers mark and royal coat of arms. In good condition and beautifully patinated, with just a couple of nibbles to the rim, no cracks, one lump out of side ( see second image ).

John Mathews held the Royal warrant of appointment, for supplying terracotta items to the royal court or royal personages, obviously being very proud of this by clearly stamping these pots with the royal coat of arms.

Examples of the same John Mathews pots, can be found in the Kitchen garden and greenhouses at Llanerchaeron House, near Cardigan, which is owned by the National Trust.
