Six rare early 20th century, stoneware golf sand boxes stamped Knowles Ltd, Darwen, Patent. Sand was used for teeing off from an early point in the development of golf, starting to be replaced in the early 20th century by reusable tees. Each numbered and with arrow direction and small drainage holes. Knocks and bruises, one with old repair.
Knowles ltd, founded in 1906 which is still around today as Knowles Wright Ltd, advertised in the first quarter of the 20th century that their specialities were: Salt Glazed Sanitary Pipes, Bends, Junctions, Gullies, and all kinds of Traps and Fittings, Cattle Troughs, Pig Troughs, Horse Mangers, Sinks; also Waste Water Closets, Latrines and Urinals; Patent Manholes, Patent Anti-flood Traps, Patent Outlet Pipes for Gas Cookers, and Knowles' Patent Golf Sand Boxes
