A wonderful large scale early 19th century carved pine beam end of a cleric. In untouched condition, naive and boldly carved, the original finish beautifully crusty.
I would suggest that this originates from a house of learning, either a college or university building and because of the size, boldness and naivety of the carving high up in the ceiling or eaves, the back has a large recess to fit over the end of a beam, set at an angle so the the figure would lean forward and look down on you.
